By Tiffany Mullinix, Bliss House Director

Our method saves lives…residents participate in a program called Recovery Dynamics which is a powerful tool to help educate them on the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. With written assignments from the Big Book of AA and one-on-one individual sponsorship work, each lesson helps the addicted person to realize their addiction is a physical allergy and a mental obsession. The only treatment that never fails is total abstinence. The goal is to identify the three stages of the program: identify the problem, define the solution, and take action to bring about the solution.

Over the course of the next several articles, I would like to share with our readers a little more detail about the process. We have 12-steps with core principals attached to each step.

Identifying the problem

Step 1 – We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives were unmanageable. The intense, overpowering desire to take the first drink is an act of the mind (mental obsession). But the craving for another and then another, is a physical phenomenon (allergic reaction) related to abnormal brain function. Despite drinking another beer, we continue to crave more. An alcoholic can never satisfy the craving. We may run out of booze, the bar may close, our supply might run out, but we never fully satisfy the craving caused by our abnormal brain response to alcohol.

Honesty is the core principal behind Step 1. You would be surprised how hard it is to admit that once we take a drink, we cannot stop or control our drinking at that point. We make a mess out of our lives by being unwilling to admit this. Once we become willing to identify we have a problem, we can make a beginning towards the solution.

Stay tuned for the next article as I walk you through step 2.

The Center for Lay Ministries (CLM) Food Pantry is proud to announce a partnership with the Jeffersonville Meijer to provide much-needed hunger relief to local families through the retailer’s customer-driven food pantry donation program, Simply Give.

The Meijer Simply Give campaign encourages customers to purchase food only gift cards in $10 increments between November 10 and January 4 for the Center for Lay Ministries.

On Tuesday, December 3, and Friday, December 13, the Jeffersonville Meijer will double your donation ($10 donation will become $30). Meijer will double match the first $5,000 donated, so the maximum double match will be $10,000.

“Meijer Simply Give is a wonderful program that helps fill the shelves of our food pantry. The program allows us to provide more food to people in Clark County during the winter months which can be really hard for our clients,” said Kara Brown, Executive Director for CLM.”

We always get excited when the warmer weather hits. Bliss House and our Bliss Alumnae plan different events to help the women we serve to explore having fun without a drink or drug. In June, we had a carwash to raise money for our ladies to attend Float for Recovery. Float for Recovery is designed around sober fun and all proceeds benefit the Healing Place in Louisville. In July, our Alumnae rally together and raise money for a weekend camping trip for our current Bliss House residents. They sleep in tents, go tubing in a lake, and end each day around a bonfire sharing about their experiences, old and new.

Getting sober is a serious matter. In fact, for most of us, it’s the difference between life and death. However, we are not a glum lot. We realize life is beautiful, and it is okay to have some fun along the way. We take these summer moments to relax, let our hair down, go camping or swimming, and enjoy the things that our eyes haven’t always been open to.
